Agate is a hard gemstone and is formed by filling a cavity in a host rock or organic matters such as wood. Petrified wood as a gem is called "agatized" and this gemstone can be found in fossils as in the case of Agatized Palm. This fossil gem comes from the Oligocene period formed about 38 million to 23 million years ago. The gemstone contains rod-like structures within the regular grain of the silicified wood. When the stone is polished it often shows many colors as well as cells of natural wood fiber long decayed from antiquity. Metaphysical properties of this petrified wood include stabilizing emotions and creating ties with nature. It is considered a good, all-purpose energetic balancer and is said to be beneficial physically for the backaches, skin and hair.
